Malang, Indonesia – In an era where environmental challenges are becoming increasingly complex, the Department of Geography at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram took a significant step forward. On July 3-4, 2023, they hosted a pivotal guest lecture series focusing on “Disaster Management: Directions and Challenges”, featuring esteemed academicians Dr. Syamsul Bachri, M.Sc., Ph.D., and Alfyananda Kurnia Putra, M.Pd. This initiative not only highlighted academic collaboration but also underscored the critical importance of the topic in the context of global and local sustainability efforts.

Disaster management is a crucial area, especially for a disaster-prone country like Indonesia. The lecture series addressed key aspects of this field, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13 (Climate Action). This focus is vital in fostering resilient communities that can withstand and bounce back from natural disasters, a necessity in the face of escalating climate change impacts.

Dr. Bachri and Mr. Putra delved into the complexities of disaster management, exploring innovative strategies and technologies that can mitigate risks and enhance response mechanisms. Their insights were instrumental in emphasizing the need for integrated approaches that combine traditional knowledge with modern technological advances. This aligns with SDGs 4 (Quality Education) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), highlighting the role of educational institutions in disseminating crucial knowledge and fostering partnerships for effective disaster response.

The significance of these discussions extended beyond academic circles, resonating with policymakers, emergency responders, and community leaders. By equipping these key stakeholders with the latest knowledge and tools in disaster management, the guest lecture series played a crucial role in strengthening societal resilience against natural calamities.

This collaborative effort between UM and FKIP Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram demonstrated a commitment to not only advancing academic understanding but also applying this knowledge in practical, life-saving ways. It served as a beacon of how higher education institutions can actively contribute to societal well-being and sustainable development.
